Tips to Help you Settle Into Your New Rotation.

In the U.K, August is when new doctors start their first jobs, and other doctors in training rotate to different departments. It is a very important time and can also be stressful for everyone for many different reasons. A new job can bring a whole range of emotions, from anxiety to anticipation of what is to come. This is why starting and settling into a new rotation should be easy. Since I also fall into this category, I'll do the majority of what will be shared here. I'm currently finishing my training and for me this part is extremely important.

There are a few things you can do to ease into a new rotation.

1. Meet with your new supervisor before you start: You need to get to know your supervisor, and both of you need to discuss expectations. As much as you need to know what is expected of you, your clinical or educational supervisor needs to know what you expect from them. During this time, you can introduce yourself to the team and get to know the people you will be working with.

2. Get a tour of the department: This will depend on the setting and where you will be working, but you need to get familiar with your new work environment. Find out where things are kept and who to contact. Since it may be really busy at work, people may not have enough time or patience to show you around, so it is important to plan for this.

3. Put your best foot forward: Remember that first impressions last, even if it seems like the department could be calm at first, you need to work hard as people are watching and things could reflect in your final review. It is also important to be diligent in what you do in order to create a positive and lasting impression.

 4. Be sure people know you are new: Even if you just introduce yourself (e.g., Hello, I am Dr. M. How can I help) that alone has passed a message and eased some pressure by letting them know what to ask for and what not to ask. It's easier that way since you don't want to appear or sound clueless.

 5. Speak out: Make sure you speak out if you are getting too stressed, take a step back and take a deep breath. Speak to your supervisor and make sure you take advantage of your annual leave. To make an impression, you don't have to break your back. Know your limit and take a break when necessary. Speak out if you feel you have been unfairly treated or bullied.

6. Be Nice: Don't just act nice; be nice as well. Treat people as you would like to be treated, be pleasant and approachable. When in doubt, ask questions and let people say nice things about you. There is no one that knows it all, so ask questions, and even if you know more than someone else, offer your advice thoughtfully and calmly.

 7. Socialise with the team: Enjoy tea with the team, make tea for your colleagues, let your presence be felt. Don't shy away from team meetings and hangouts. By doing so, people will know you and stick out for you if you need it for any reason.

Starting a new job or rotation can be stressful, so be open minded and don't take things personally. Lastly, enjoy your time in the department, be yourself, create memories, and make the days count.
