International Medical Graduates always have to work harder than others. This is because everything is different and so more time may be needed to adapt to an entirely new system. Most people make some of these mistakes I shared here https://www.berrysmotivation.co.uk/2021/07/5-common-mistakes-imgs-make.html?m=1 but most of them could be avoided with these 10 smart tips.
Here are 10 smart ways to be more efficient as an IMG
1. Maintain an up-to-date portfolio electronically or in any other way possible. Make sure to sign off on your competences so you can use them in your next job or rotation.
2. Make sure you are not alone, surround yourself with a diverse group of friends that includes IMGs and non-IMGs
3. Don't take criticism personally, it should be a learning experience for you.
4. Speak up if you are being treated unfairly. Rather than keeping silent, take advantage of the available assistance and support.
5. Get into a specialisation you love, not what everyone else is doing; you can thrive in any specialty. This is because you receive more support during training than outside of training.
6. Work smart, not hard. It is just a matter of knowing how to strike the balance between hard work and smart work. Take care not to overwork yourself.
7. Be aware of new systems and changes around you. Since you are expected to know these things, you shouldn't appear clueless and helpless.
8. You need to have the relevant skills, read, take the necessary exams, ask questions, get involved and know what you need to do. The level of your competency will be tested at different times, so you have to be prepared.
9. Getting enough rest is paramount. Money is important, but your health and well-being are just as important.
10. You cannot buy experience, experience increases your competency, learn while you work, don't just clock in and out. Gain experience, learn new things, and become more efficient.
