As someone always looking for ways to improve, personal growth is very important to me. It’s a trait that has brought me this far. At work, when I receive feedback—whether it’s correction or criticism—I take it on board and look for ways to apply it to become better.
Before diving into tips for personal growth, it's essential to first recognize and drop certain habits that may be holding you back.
Habits That Hinder Personal Growth
Comparison
Try not to compare yourself to others. Everyone has their own journey and story. When you compare your progress to someone else’s success, you may not see the struggles, sacrifices, or hurdles they’ve overcome to get there. Instead of comparing, focus on your own path and learn from others rather than measuring yourself against them.
Subtle Jealousy
This is a habit we often deny having, but it can quietly creep in. If you find yourself feeling the need to bring others down, make yourself seem superior, or speak negatively about someone’s achievements, jealousy might be at play. Recognizing and addressing this feeling can help you grow emotionally and mentally.
Procrastination
This is one of the biggest barriers to success and personal growth. I’m currently reading Atomic Habits, and even in the first few chapters, I’ve already learned so much. When faced with a big task, we often feel overwhelmed and put it off for later. However, breaking it down into smaller, manageable steps makes it much easier to accomplish.

In a world dominated by social media, it’s easy to spend endless hours scrolling through other people’s lives. Instead, we could use that time to read books or blogs that help us grow—whether it’s personal development, finance, or even something related to a hobby. Continuous learning is key to personal growth.
Rest
Rest is essential. As a doctor, I’m learning to take my own advice on this. The brain can become overwhelmed with too much information, making it difficult to process new ideas. Taking time to rest allows for a clear mind, better planning, and more effective decision-making.
Be Mindful of What and Who You Listen To
Sometimes, out of sentiment, we allow the wrong influences into our lives—whether it’s people or information. The things and individuals we engage with shape our mindset, often in ways we don’t immediately realize. Being intentional about what we consume can have a significant impact on our growth.
Networking
This is a crucial part of personal growth. In isolation, it’s difficult to connect with like-minded individuals or those who have already developed themselves in the field or path you aspire to grow in. Learning good networking skills is essential—whether that means attending events, intentionally reaching out to people in your desired field, or simply speaking up and seeking help when you feel stuck.
Many of us hesitate to ask for guidance because we feel shy or intimidated by the success of others. However, it’s important to put pride and fear aside and take intentional steps toward your goals. Building meaningful connections can open doors, provide valuable insight, and accelerate your personal growth journey.
Personal growth is a continuous journey, and small, intentional changes can make a big difference. Keep learning, keep improving, and most importantly, be patient with yourself along the way.
